Such a night will live in their memories for the rest of their lives. It is one night, one moment where they thought of nothing else, but each otherâs happiness. Not work, bills, health, or even Mr. Yarrow could ruin this for them. Time is a precious commodity so why waste it on things you canât control or change?
Chapter Twenty-Four
Wedding Day
Time passes in the blink of an eye. One day we are sending Fabiola off to her first day of pre-k and the next we are decorating for Regina and Willâs wedding. Libitina displays astonishing growth. Over the last year, she has gone from eating with her hands, needing help getting on the couch, and someone changing her diaper, to using a fork and spoon, pushing a plastic folding step stool around to get to places sheâs too short to reach, and using the toilet on her own. Iâve even caught her humming the chorus from Madam Butterfly. She warms my silhouette as she runs by and ignores me.
Odd.
I donât sense temperature from any other human.
She disregards my existence on purpose. Before it was due to a busy toddler mind.
Everyone is happy. Nothing could ruin this day, not even rain. The forecast calls for a gorgeous fall day, so no one is worried.
Lola smooths Reginaâs satin gown and adjusts a few pearls. The backless ballgown flows beautifully over Regina's hourglass frame. Fabiola carries in a tiara with an attached veil, and rests it in her motherâs palm. The girls wear tea-length rust-colored satin dresses with hair ribbons to match. Libitinaâs short, wavy brown locks curl around the shiny material, while Fabiolaâs rings bounce behind hers.
Outside, Hector straightens Asher the goatâs bowtie as Pastor James adjusts Willâs collar. The intimate wedding only has a select number of attendees. A few officers and detectives from the force, Reginaâs parents, and her brother. The farmer dropped by with a card and left. He hasnât said much of anything, and they rarely see him since the incident in the crops, but they drop in on him on occasion and bring him dinner. Hector gazes at the empty seat reserved for his sister. If only she could leave the house to see this.
It wasnât for lack of trying. Hector brought Libitina to Marieâs house. After she displayed comfort with Libitina at their first meeting, he thought it was worth a try. She made it to the car, but the approaching unfamiliar mailman sabotaged their efforts, and Marie retreated inside her sanctuary.
Hector plans to videotape, and send it to her, but itâs not the same.
âI want the dark one,â Fabiola says as she picks up the bundle of red mums mixed with crimson roses. âHere Libby, take this one,â she offers handing Libitina the bouquet with orange mums and lilies.
âThank you, sissy,â Libitina smiles squeezing the white stick.
I float around the yard, listening to the few people in attendance. I donât have to be here. But things are quiet now, and I have nothing else to do.
